About space-ist.com

space-ist.com provides consultancy services of its Principal, Dr Chris Welch, a highly-experienced interdisciplinary aero/space engineer and educator, as well as other members of the space-ist network as required.
Dr Chris Welch: "I am a former academic, most recently Full Professor of Astronautics and Space Engineering at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France, where I was Head of the Space Payloads Laboratory and Director of the interdisciplinary MSc in Space Studies. Although initially a physicist and later an aerospace engineer, after more than 30 years of working and teaching in interdisciplinary environments, I am now a freelance ‘space-ist’ with expertise and knowledge across multiple disciplines of the aero/space endeavour.

I am also a former President of the British Interplanetary Society (BIS),  one-time Vice-President of the International Astronautical Federation and a member of the then European Commission H2020 Space Advisory Committee. In addition, I am a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Interplanetary Society respectively and have been an advisor on two enquiries into UK space policy

I am a frequent commentator on space and astronautics and have made more than 300 television and radio broadcasts. I also have a significant track record in both space education/outreach and in higher education, receiving the 2009 Sir Arthur Clarke Award for Space Education and 2015 IAF Distinguished Service Award. In 2019 I was elected to the International Academy of Astronautics.

In other areas of the space endeavour, I was one of the final twenty candidates for the 1991 UK-USSR Juno mission to the Mir space station, I have written what I believe to be the first ever paper on extraterrestrial garden design, and I wrote a poem that orbited the Earth on the International Space Station for more that three years."
